My Monthly Spotify Playlists for 2018

Every month I make a playlist on Spotify filled with songs I just discovered, I love, I can’t get out of my head but ultimately the songs that reflect my mood during the month. This is the first time I’ll be making a massive post on my blog featuring my monthly playlists of 2018. For some months I became really obsessive over my music, Discover Weekly playlist and I found a lot of great new music so there are “prt.2’s” for a few months in 2018.

The Spotify widgets just feature snippets, if you want to listen to my playlists in full click on the Spotify link to the playlists page.

January 2018: The beginning of my last semester of college

February 2018: just dawned on me it is my last semester, bizarre

March 2018: so close to graduation, don’t know what to do with myself

April 2018: finals, finals, finals

May 2018: Graduated finally, got my BA in English and feeling lucky, turned 25 and feeling useless

June 2018: Job hunting and not enjoying the weather, too hot, Poetry Reading at the Utah Arts Festival

July 2018: A month of sweating, scorching heat and irritation

August 2018: more irritation…the job market is looking daunting

September 2018: Hard at work looking for writing jobs and working on my blog, began crocheting a giant blanket…I still haven’t finished.

October 2018: Crazy about Halloween, spent the entire month watching horror films, reading scary stories and obsessing over Elvira. Created a Patreon page.

November 2018: Spent the entire month of November participating in NaNoWriMo

December 2018: Kind of in a daze, obsessed with my book and trying to work on draft #2 so far only half way through.

Thanks for poking around and taking a look at my music selection. I hope you find something new maybe even something you like.

A Wild Year: My Top Songs on Spotify, Currently Reading List and Reflecting on 2018

This year has gone by too fast and I feel like I am still trying to catch up. I have gotten a lot done this year from my graduation at the University of Utah with my BA (finally) to a PAID poetry reading at the Utah Arts Festival in June, to finishing the first rough draft of my book Ghost in the Woods for NaNoWriMo.

Since it’s the end of the year, I thought I would give a quick update on what I’m listening to and reading.

Goodreads “Currently Reading” List

Currently reading 1

currently reading 2

There are A LOT of books on my “Currently Reading” list and I am trying to widdle it down a bit before the New Year but I guess I’ll see how successful I am with that. One book that isn’t on this list that I’ve been reading every day now is Collected Sonnets by Edna St. Vincent Millay, my copy is really old and falling apart. I had to spend a good hour last week taping pages back together into the seam of the book. I’m about halfway through it and I love it, Millay is amazing with Sonnets and she makes it look so easy.

Highlight of my 2018:

Going to “An Evening with Neil Gaiman” last month was amazing. Gaiman had some great advice to give and thankfully many questions from the audience were geared towards writing and publishing. It was also so much fun to hear Gaiman read a little from some of his books.

Last Adventures: Discovering “Found Poetry

Last week I sort of stumbled on “Found” poetry. It’s a form that I am sure I’ve come across before but up until now haven’t given a second thought too. Found Poetry is a form where people can find poetry in everyday life, like text, billboards, magazines etc. For instance, I was inspired to mess around and try “finding” some poetry in a local newspaper at work this week.

FOUND POETRY on my Instagram story highlights

I was pretty surprised at what I found and now I am hooked. My hands are stained from newspaper ink, markers, pens, and I have already begun putting my found poems together in one notebook making a sort of hand-made chapbook. (I will make an official post about my Found Poetry soon)

Conclusion:

I am stoked for the New Year and I am working hard to set up my work and myself for an even more successful year. What am I working on right now? Submitting my best-polished work to literary journals and magazines, putting together a small chapbook of my poems to self-publish (maybe) on Kindle, and finishing my book Ghost in the Woods so that I can start submitting it to literary agents/publishers.

What do I want to accomplish in 2019?

Honing this blog into a more coherent and substantial literary blog, maybe even monetizing it, providing more content to my followers/readers that can actually help them.

Sidenote:

A couple months ago I finally set up a Patreon Creator Page. My Patreon is different from this blog in that it provides “behind-the-scenes” access to my creative process, work (including rough drafts), and special updates. This is a more personal online venue where my followers can show their appreciation for my work by becoming Patrons and giving a little bit of $ to contribute to my writing.

Right now I am offering Help/Tutoring to those that donate $20/month to my Patreon.

Be a PATRON! Subscribe to my Patreon for one month ($20) and receive one on one help with your writing for an entire month!

It’s been a great year and I can’t wait for 2019!

I want to say Thank you to all of my Followers, subscribers, and to any readers that stumble on this post. Thank you for reading!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Going Old School with Jack White: Review of Boarding House Reach Show in SLC UTAH

Jack White performing in Salt Lake City 2018 Photo: David James SwansonEarlier this year I set an alarm for the exact hour tickets for Jack White’s 2018 tour would go on sale. I remember waking up to my alarm heart pumping buying my tickets. I spent the next few months looking at the tickets I had printed out and pinned up above my calendar, August seemed so far away then but suddenly it was here. Last night, finally, I went and saw Jack White at Saltair in Salt Lake City, Utah.

By the time I got to Saltair with my boyfriend, Tyler Childers was finishing up. We were in line to get in about to experience something we never have before. What was different about this concert experience was YONDR. This was a “NO-PHONE” show. While in line we were given small green pouches to put our phones in. They had a security retail clasp that sealed the pouch and could only be opened with certain magnetic disks.

Security was pretty thorough and everyone in line was searched. Yondr employees were everywhere and we had to go through about two layers of them before even entering Saltair. The first layer handed out the pouches and helped guests put their phones in them. The second layer past security checked every pouch to make sure it was closed. You keep the pouch on you which is a little awkward since it really sticks out of a back pocket.

As a “No-Phone” show, there were no photos or recordings allowed and you could only get your phone out of the pouch in specific areas. It was a little strange to see everyone phone-less walking around and talking. A little bizarre but at the same time, it was refreshing. I had to communicate with my boyfriend a place to meet just in case we got separated but overall I thought it was really cool to have a couple hours phone-less. My boyfriend, on the other hand, thought it was ridiculous and impractical. Both of our experiences with this phone-free show were different but I think important in understanding both sides of this kind of event. I think no access to phones during a concert is cool and definitely “old school”, devices make the experience different today and we are constantly distracted, not fully paying attention and devoting our time to “here and now”. While on the other hand our phones are so incorporated into our daily lives that without access to them could handicap us.

Around 9 p.m. stage lights blacked out and the crowd roared. Jack White came on and everyone was bathed in blue and white lights. His band all dressed in black were vibrant and professional, banging their heads together as Jack White moved across the stage singing and playing guitar exuding his unique magnetism. Alternating between drums and guitar for a few songs Jack White was energetic and connected with the audience the entire time.

I noticed that without the distraction of phones, there were no tiny screens blocking my view of the stage just bobbing heads. The audience’s response and interaction with White was fast paced and instantaneous. In the end, just when everyone thought it was over and White exited the stage, singing began to grow into a loud chorus from the audience in front to the very back, clapping and singing the popular “Seven Nation Army”. The crowd kept up the singing for a couple minutes before bursting into a roar as White came back on stage with his band, the drums began to pound and the crowd erupted as White played “Seven Nation Army” and then a few more songs.

Overall, I have to say I had a great time and not having access to my phone really gave me a different (arguably better) experience at this concert than other ones I’ve attended in the past. Jack White was electric, he lit up the stage and his band matched him perfectly in skill and energy. The words that keep popping up in my mind about this performance are “magnetic and professional”. I could tell just from watching the show, these were professional musicians, these are artists that take their work seriously and have a deep devotion for the music and the audience, an attitude, and approach that I have rarely if ever seen before.

I used to have this great habit of creating playlists of my (new) favorite songs every month, especially during school. This summer has been chaotic for me and full of so much change I feel like I’m just finally getting back to normality and my playlists…

The Summer Chaos…I graduated from college and switched between two jobs. I have spent the last couple of months adjusting to the idea I don’t have any more school. What do I do now? (Relax) I now have my BA in English and plenty of time to read whatever I want and as much as I want…(I will be posting a list of what I am currently reading right now soon, a staggering 12-14 books)…

ALSO, I’m not sure if anyone has noticed but I have transitioned from a wordpress.com blog to an official wordpress.org site with my own domain name and everything (very official) this transition was two months of hard work, including registering my domain, figuring out wordpress.org, loading themes and working out the details…my new site is a little over a week old now and I’m so relieved it’s over with!

So I have finally had time to put together some playlists on my Spotify I haven’t shared my playlists publically before but I think it’s about time. I spend most of my spare time listening to music, reading, and writing as well as painting the odd painting here and there. My music drives me, gives me focus, and helps me work out problems, obstacles, and creative challenges that come my way. Without my music, I think I would be a very dull and very quiet person…

MA PLAYLITZ!!!

I want to say thank you to all my followers, regular readers, and everyone who takes time out of their day to read my words (poems, scatterbrain thoughts, book reviews, whatever). I am so grateful to you all!

I am planning on posting more content with a more regular schedule in the following weeks. This will include continuing the Bertha Short Story Series, writing more book reviews, and music/film discussions.

As usual, I am open to any suggestions for discussion topics from readers that would love to read my response or criticism on literature, poetry, film, music, or art. Please leave any suggestions or comments below!

Favorite Tracks: Superorganism

Latest obsession when it comes to tunes is Superorganism’s album “Superorganism“.

This is album was just released this year and it’s amazing. Superorganism consists of eight band members who all play an assortment of instruments including making their own authentic sounds such as water and blowing bubbles in liquids (rather than using pre-recorded tracks and playing them). A good example of this can be found in their NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert from May,

I honestly love this entire album but here are a few songs I would recommend to curious listeners (conveniently these songs also have official music videos),
